Written by moblessing

Looking to Move to the US Or Study USA ? Lucky for you, your dream may become a reality! Thanks to the green card lottery anyone from an eligible country can become the lucky winner of permanent residency in the US!

Unlike other visas to the US, the green card lottery doesn’t require that you have special education, job, or intend to invest or study in the US. To qualify, you simply need to have a high school diploma, or some work experience, prove you are healthy and have no criminal record. So how do you enter the green card lottery? When does it take place? When do you find out if you’ve won? Read on to find out!

The U.S. government gives away 55,000 permanent residence permits (= Green Cards) in its annual “diversity visa lottery”. Each year, the U.S. Department of State determines and announces the date for online registration and the date on which the Green Card winners will be drawn. In the following, we describe the participation rules and registration deadlines for the Green Card lottery.

Green Card lottery registration period

The Green Card lottery registration period is determined by the U.S. Department of State each year. Usually, the official green card application takes place in the fall, i.e. between the beginning of October and the beginning of November.

The diversity visa lottery is open again for applicants: Registration for the DV-2024 Green Card lottery can officially begin on October 6, 2022.

Tip: Participation in the next Green Card lottery is already possible via The American Dream. If you did not register for the last DV-2023, you have a new chance with the Green Card lottery DV-2024. The earlier you participate, the cheaper the registration is for you. Click here to enter the 2022 Green Card lottery (DV-2024)!

The closing date for the DV-2024 lottery at The American Dream is October 17, 2022. All applications, including photos, are carefully reviewed and if necessary, trained staff will contact the applicant. The advantage of that is that The American Dream can guarantee participation to every customer.

DV stands for “Diversity Visa” and the number 2024 in the DV program represents the U.S. fiscal year, which begins October 1, 2023 and ends September 30, 2024. At the same time, this corresponds to the period in which the winners will receive their Green Card.

Drawing of the winners / Entrant Status Check

The drawing of the Green Card winners by the U.S. authorities normally takes place in spring of the following year. However, the exact date will be set each year in the same manner as the registration period.

What does it mean to participate in the Green Card lottery?  Participation in the Green Card lottery means that if you win, you can emigrate to the United States. Anyone who wants to live and / or work permanently in the United States needs what is known as an immigrant visa, also known as a Green Card.  There are three ways to obtain a Green Card:      Green Card through employment     Permanent Residential i.e. Green Card through family reunification or     Green Card through winning the Green Card lottery.  In particular, applicants who want to obtain a Green Card through the employer or through family reunification often have to meet very strict entry requirements and also face long waiting periods. A better option may therefore be to participate in the annual Green Card program. This is because a Green Card won in the lottery also gives you the unrestricted right to live and work permanently in the U.S. without being tied to a particular employer. Also, for people who do not qualify for a non-immigrant visa (e.g. E or H-1B work visa), participation in the Green Card lottery is also an alternative, as registration for the lottery is subject to much lower entry requirements.

Our tip for those wishing to emigrate

Green Card applications can be made either online at the U.S. Department of State website or through a specialized green card agency. In particular, emigration seekers who are unsure about the registration and process of the Green Card lottery in general can confidently contact our sister company The American Dream – US Green Card Service, which specializes in the application and processing of Green Cards under the lottery. What is the DV-2025 Lottery Program?

The U.S. DV (Diversity Visa) Lottery Program, also known as the Green Card Lottery, provides 55,000 Diversity Visas each fiscal year to persons drawn from randomly selected entries. Winning entrants are from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States and must meet strict eligibility requirements. Officially called the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, the DV Lottery provides a U.S. green card to those who are selected and who go through the process of obtaining a U.S. Immigrant Visa.

This year, the U.S. Department of State will again offer the Diversity Visa Program, which will provide winners with legal entrance to the U.S. Entries made in 2023 are for the DV-2025 Lottery, as January 2025 will be when winners are allowed to immigrate permanently to the United States. By then, permanent residence card winners are required to have submitted all of their immigration forms and successfully participated in a green card interview at the nearest Embassy to their current place of residence. Online registration for DV-2025 will only be available on the State Department website between October and November 2023. But it is available at all times here at DV-Experts.

When to Register for The Green Card DV Lottery Program ?

The green card lottery usually opens around the 1st of October and closes around the 22nd of November. You enter online at https://www.dvlottery.state.gov

When you enter the lottery, it doesn’t affect your chances of winning. But the last few days tend to draw a lot of traffic to the site and sometimes it crashes. That means that to ensure you don’t miss out, you should apply as soon as possible.

In 2017, there were some technical glitches on the site when the lottery first opened, the site eventually closed, and everyone who had entered the lottery had to redo their entries once the site reopened. Therefore, if you enter, do keep an eye on the news to see that there haven’t been any announcements to say there are problems with the site.

When Do You Find Out if You Have Won DV Lottery Program?

The winners are usually announced in May the following year (i.e. about six months after the lottery closes). More winners are sometimes announced later in the year if not enough of the chosen winners have followed through and applied for a green card. However, more winners are always announced than there are green cards as about half either fail to apply or don’t meet the criteria once applying.

How Do You Find Out if You Have Won DV Lottery Program?

You need to check online (do save your entry number as you will need it when checking your status) at the same site as where you registered for the lottery in the first place (https://www.dvlottery.state.gov).

Beware of scammers who send out emails saying you’ve won a green card — the US government will not email you to say you’ve won. The only way to find out if you’ve won is through the online site. If you receive an email claiming you have won, it is a scam (unless the green card lottery rules changes and the US government starts mailing people. But in that case, it will be announced on the DV lottery site).

What Do You Need to Do if You Win?

If you win the green card lottery — congratulations! You are one step closer to starting a new life in the US! However, you do still have to apply for the actual green card. This involves filing some paperwork and proving your health is good and that you have no criminal record. It will also involve an interview with the American Embassy.

If you win you should apply for your green card as soon as possible. Because, as mentioned, more winners are announced than there are green cards. That means that if against the odds, too many people apply and they run out of green cards that year, you might not get your green card, even if you won.

Also, there’s a time limit. You have till the end of the fiscal year the following year to apply and be approved. As there are several steps to the application, it can take time, however. Therefore, it is best to start as soon as possible. It can also be wise to hire a lawyer, to ensure you get all the paperwork right and there aren’t any delays due to mistakes.

The naming of the lottery Year

If you applied for the green card lottery in 2020, it’s called the diversity visa lottery 2022, or DV-2022. This is because 2022 is the year you’d be arriving in the US with your green card, even though you applied in 2020 and won in 2021.”

Two years might sound like a long time to wait for a visa, but once you apply things happen fast — there’s a lot of paperwork to fill out and plans to be made for a new life in a new country!
